Principal's Message

It is my proud privilege to serve as the Principal and Chief Superintendent of Assam Medical College & Hospital, the premier and most esteemed center for medical education in Northeast India. With its roots in the John Berry White Medical School—the first medical institution in the region—this institute has a distinguished history of delivering quality medical education and healthcare services, catering to the needs of upper Assam and neighboring states.

Founded in 1900 through the generous donation of Rs. 50,000—his lifetime earnings—by Dr. John Berry White (MRCS), a British surgeon of the East India Company, the institution was originally established in the then-undivided Lakhimpur district of Assam. It was later upgraded to a full-fledged medical college and formally inaugurated as Assam Medical College on November 3, 1947, by Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Premier of Assam.

Over the past seven decades, this esteemed institution has not only produced countless skilled medical graduates and postgraduates but has also played a crucial role in the development of other medical colleges in the state. Additionally, the unique bond shared between our students and faculty is an integral part of the college’s legacy. Our students have always been the pride of this institution, carrying its name and prestige across the globe. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to them for their love and dedication and hope that this legacy continues for generations to come.
