Department of General Surgery

Nestling amongst the picturesque tea gardens of Assam, the history of Assam Medical College is as old as Independent India. The history of the inception of the Department of Surgery goes back even further, to the era of World War II and Major General Joseph Warren Stillwell. The Department of Surgery was established in 1948 in the Old Berry White Medical School and Hospital. Due to the efforts of a lot of people, both political and apolitical, and the establishment of Assam Medical College in its present campus, after a year, the department was shifted from the Berry White Medical School to the campus of the present Assam Medical College.Dr. Ghanshyam Das Kapur, a reputed retired Professor of Surgery was brought, on a contractual basis from Lahore Medical College to set up the Department of Surgery at Assam Medical College. He joined Assam Medical College in 1948 and was the first Professor & Head of the Department of Surgery at Assam Medical College. The Department of Surgery started as single ward but soon a second unit was started. D. G. D. Kapur, Dr. P. Nambiar, Dr. B. N. Banerjee and Dr. P. N. Baruah along with their surgical teams were credited with the laying down of the foundations of a strong Surgical Department. Posterity will always remember their contribution. Dr. P. Nambiar, a retired Professor from the south, joined as Professor in the second surgical unit. Dr. Kashyap and Dr. M. P. Pai served as Assistant Professors. Although their tenures were short, their contribution in teaching students and laying out the framework of the surgical department were invaluable. In the early days when the clinical departments were in their nascent stages, there was a dearth of junior staff. House surgeons and Registrars were almost non existent. This need was fulfilled by enlisting the LMP doctors, (Licentiate Medical Practitioners) who passed out from the Berry White Medical School.Dr. Ashrafuz Zaman Ahmed was the first MBBS Graduate (Graduating from R. G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata) to join Assam Medical College as a House Physician initially, and later joined the Department of Surgery as a house surgeon. Each succeeding head of the Surgical Department, in a greater or smaller measure had their role to play in building the department to its present status consisting of seven (7) surgical units and an OT complex. The establishment of the Operation Theatre of Assam Medical College is steeped in history. The credit of setting up of the first Operation Theatre in Assam goes to MajorGeneral Joseph Warren Stillwell. He was entrusted with the job of preventing the Japanese entry from the eastern front into the subcontinent of British India.Because of its strategic location, the Borbari Race Course of Dibrugarh was acquired to set up the Military Base Hospital of the Eastern Front along with an Operation Theatre. In order to provide the best medical care to the war casualties, Major General Stillwell gave instructions to the army command to bring the infrastructure of 26 IGCH Hospital of New York to the Base Hospital at Borbari in Dibrugarh. When the World War II ended, the base hospital and its facilities, including the OT and its instruments were handed over to the Government of Assam Province of British India. The then Superintendent of Berry White Medical School, took charge of the premise. This was the origin of the historic OT – 1 of Assam Medical College.
Subsequently other operation theatres were added to Assam Medical College but even today “OT – 1” stands alone, a mute testimony of a glorious past of a bygone era, as a reflection of the changing times.Time and tide waits for none. Due to the ravages of time the old Surgical wards with their open verandahs and airy wards had to be replaced by a new Surgical Complex, which housed all the wards and the OT complex at one place.General Surgery as a discipline, encompassed all surgical specialties at the beginning when Assam Medical College & Hospital first came into existence. At present, the Department of General Surgery is still supporting the units of Neurosurgery, CTVS and Urology, till they can establish full fledged departments. The number of Post Graduate students who have passed through the portals of the Department of Surgery today number more than 700. They carry the legacy of Assam Medical College, wherever they go. They are rendering their services all around the country and even beyond the national borders. As we pick up new challenges and try to successfully meet them, our vision is to make the Department of Surgery of Assam Medical College one of the best equipped departments in one of the oldest Medical Colleges of the Country, in terms of services offered & services rendered, with a humane and compassionate touch, which Assam Medical College had always been famous for.

“Care with compassion” is the signature statement we will always strive to achieve.
