Department of Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry at Assam Medical College and Hospital has a rich and illustrious history. Initially taught in combination with Physiology, Biochemistry emerged as a distinct and independent subject in 1986. Since then, the department has evolved rapidly to meet the advancing demands of modern medical science.

Notable pioneers such as Prof. Rohini Kanta Baruah, Prof. R.L. Nath, and Prof. Rafiul Hussain—the first Medical Demonstrator in Biochemistry—have made significant contributions. Prof. Hussain’s work on iron metabolism is referenced in several medical textbooks. Distinguished figures like Dr. J.N. Baruah, Dr. A. Saikia, and Dr. Ganesh Chandra Baruah (former Principal, AMCH) have further enriched the department's legacy with groundbreaking research, some being the first of their kind in India.
