DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF PATHOLOGY LAB
HEMATOLOGY:
The Hematology Laboratory plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of blood disorders, including anemia, leukemias, clotting disorders, and infections affecting the blood.
Equipped with modern diagnostic tools like a 5-part differential haematology analyser - Sysmex Xn-1000, Erba H7100, Erba Elite 580, Sysmex XN 550, and fully automated ERBA Coagulation Analysers, the lab supports both clinical and academic functions. These facilities allow for precise analysis of blood cells, bone marrow examinations, and immuno phenotyping, which are essential for diagnosing conditions such as leukaemia and lymphoma.
Regular academic activities like seminars, case discussions, and research projects keep students and faculty up-to-date with advancements in haematological sciences.
In addition to routine investigations, the lab also supports research work and participates in collaborative studies, contributing to the broader field of haematology in north-eastern India. The Haematology Lab at AMC is not just a diagnostic centre but also a hub of learning, innovation, and research.
HISTOPATHOLOGY:
The Histopathology Laboratory at Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh is a cornerstone of diagnostic and academic excellence in the field of pathology in Northeast India. Functioning under the Department of Pathology, the lab plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of various diseases by studying tissues and biopsies at the microscopic level. It is especially significant in the identification and classification of cancers, inflammatory conditions, and other tissue-based pathologies. The Lab also performs tissue frozen section biopsies from departments.

CYTOPATHOLOGY:
The Cytopathology Laboratory at Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh is a vital part of the Department of Pathology, offering essential diagnostic services that aid in the early detection and management of a wide range of diseases. The lab specializes in the examination of exfoliated and aspirated cells, playing a crucial role in cancer screening, infection detection, and evaluation of inflammatory conditions.
Key services provided by the lab include:
Pap smear screening for the early detection of cervical cancer and other epithelial abnormalities in women.
Fluid cytology, including examination of pleural, peritoneal, pericardial, and cerebrospinal fluids, to detect malignant cells, infections, and other pathological changes.
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) – a minimally invasive, quick, and cost-effective diagnostic technique used for evaluating palpable swellings and deep-seated lesions. FNAC is routinely performed on lymph nodes, thyroid, breast, salivary glands, and soft tissue masses to assess for benign or malignant conditions. Guided FNAC using ultrasound or CT is also conducted in collaboration with radiology for accurate sampling of deeper lesions.

BLOOD BANK:
The Blood Bank at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, is a vital healthcare facility committed to providing safe, screened, and quality blood to patients in need. Functioning under the Department of Transfusion Medicine, it plays a crucial role in managing emergencies, surgical procedures, trauma cases, and the treatment of various medical conditions requiring blood support.
A key feature of the blood bank is its advanced Component Separation Unit, which allows for the separation of donated whole blood into its individual components—Red Blood Cells (RBCs), Platelets, and Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP). This ensures optimal and appropriate use of blood, enabling clinicians to treat patients with exactly what they require, thereby improving outcomes and reducing the risk of transfusion-related complications.
The Blood Bank also conducts regular voluntary blood donation camps, encouraging community participation and spreading awareness about the importance of safe blood donation. All collected blood is thoroughly screened for infectious diseases including HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and malaria to ensure safety and quality.
In addition to clinical services, the Blood Bank serves as a hub for academic training and research, offering hands-on exposure in transfusion practices to medical students, interns, and postgraduate trainees.
With its modern infrastructure, skilled personnel, and commitment to excellence, the Blood Bank at Assam Medical College continues to be a cornerstone of patient care and emergency medical support in the region.
