Introduction
The Department of Ophthalmology at Assam Medical College and Hospital, established in the year 1948 under the visionary leadership of Prof. R. Labhaya, stands as a centre of excellence in the field of eye care in this region. With a legacy spanning over seven decades, the department has been evolving into one of the most advanced and comprehensive eye care institute and has been widely recognized and accepted for its academic acumen, clinical excellence, community health and advanced research in ophthalmology. The department also proudly hold the first post graduate MS course curriculum among all specialities in Assam Medical College. The department also is a hub of cataractsurgery with one of the highest patient footfalls in entire northeastern region as well as for treating patients in the field of medical retina. The department is well equipped with latest state of the art Lumera microscope, Topcon OMS 900 microscope with monitor, Ortelli Phacoemulsification, Cirrus OCT and wet lab facilities. The department also treated more than thousand patients of retinal pathologies with Intra-vitreal Ranibizumab and Bevacizumab injections almost free of cost and it is unique among medical colleges in entire India.
