Department of Pharmacology

The department of Pharmacology was set up in an Assam type, half walled, wooden pillared, asbestos roofed construction which was originally raised as barracks for Garrison Hospital, during World War II for treating war casualties. The Assam type building has been demolished to pave way for new construction and department of Pharmacology has been shifted to the 3rd floor of one of the two basic science RCC buildings in 2012.
The department received its first batch of undergraduate students in 1948. Prof. Khem Singh Grewal (1894-1965) who was one of the founders of the subject in Assam was the founder head of the department in AMC.
Dr. Rudra Goswami who succeeded him was also instrumental in framing the department of Pharmacology and worked tirelessly for its upliftment. He started animal experiments in the department although there was no certified animal house at that time.
Prof. Goswami was followed by Dr. Alimuddin Ahmed as the head of the department in AMC, who was one of the pioneers of modern Pharmacology in Assam. He was a loved doctor and an excellent teacher. He served as the head of the department till 1961 when he was transferred to the newly set up Guwahati Medical College to steer and set up the Pharmacology department there.
The department uses computer assisted learning methods to impart basic knowledge of animal pharmacology to both the UG and PG students. The department has a registered animal house with permission to house small animals and an animal ethics committee with CPCSEA nominees. The department has a pharmacovigilance unit and it has an ADR monitoring centre under the Pharmacovigilance program of India. It has been regularly reporting adverse drug reactions with the help of the software vigiflow to the Indian Pharmacopeia commission in Ghaziabad.
