Department of Paediatric Surgery

Department of Pediatric surgery was established as a unit under General Surgery department in 1986 with Dr, Nirmal Ch. Bhattacharyya, MS, M.Ch. as Assistant Professor of the unit. A part of the Pediatrics ward was renovated to be used as operation theatre. Initially the unit had 16 general beds, but later a 5 bedded neonatal surgical intensive care unit was added in 1995. In 2005, a part of the ward was renovated for a 5 bedded pediatric Oncology ward by Makon Bala Dutta Memorial Children’s Cancer Trust. Subsequently, Dr. Hemonta Kr. Dutta Joined as Registrar in September, 1993 followed byDr. Sajjid Ahmed, Dr.Rajib Rai Baruah and Dr.PradipKr.Deuri.

Dr.DuttawaspromotedasAssistantProfessorafterhisM.Ch.trainingatAIIMS, New Delhi in 1999. He is presently working as Professor & Head of the department. Dr. Kinkar Mahanta joined as Assistant Professor in 2010, Dr. Pradip Kr. Deuri as Assistant Professor in 2011 and Associate Professor in 2017 and Dr. Manoj Gogoi as Registrar in 2011 and Assistant Professor in 2016. The department was upgraded to a department in 2012 and in 2021 the department was shifted to the new Super specialty building.

• Dr. Hemonta Kr. Dutta:
  1. Delivered a CME talk titled "Anterior encephaloceles in adolescents: Challenges during surgical reconstruction and outcome" at the 17th NEIAPSCON-22, Kohima, Nagaland on 30th November 2022.
  2. Delivered a CME talk titled "Age and Stages Questionnaires: Feasibility of online survey for post-shunt hydrocephalus follow-up" at the 17th NEIAPSCON-22, Kohima, Nagaland on 30th November 2022.
  3. Panelist at a panel discussion on "Prevention of Birth Defects" on the occasion of World Birth Defect Day observed at AIIMS, New Delhi on 3rd March 2023 with AIIMS faculties.

Every year more than 5000 admissions, and over 1200 major surgeries are performed in the department. Complex operations like, major hepatic resections, Porto systemic surgeries, craniostenosis, hydrocephalus, craniofacial reconstruction for anterior encephaloceles, bladder augmentation etc are regularly carried out at the department. The department received permission from the National Medical Commission to start M.Ch. course in 2022. The department has achieved many milestones and awards over the years for its exemplary service and research activities.
